Socratic Seminar Prompt
We live in an age of disasters. From floods and hurricanes to volcanoes, droughts and earthquakes, natural hazards are affecting vulnerable communities worldwide. At the same time, modern media, the Internet and social networking tools all ensure that news about today’s disasters are delivered to global audiences in “live time”, via our televisions, computers and smartphones. Extreme events, however, do not need to spell disasters.
Socratic Seminar questions:
1. What type of disaster would be the worst to face?
2. What life-impacting issues arise during each type of disaster?
3. Does disaster bring out the best or worst in people?
4. What character traits are essential to human spirit when faced with disaster?
5. What do we lose/gain through natural disaster?
